Hey guys! I’m back with another post. Summer is approaching and that means our youth will be out of school to enjoy a long summer break! I wish I had one!!
After watching a YouTube video on Summer Learning Loss, I never realized how children spent their summer vacation could determine their success rate in a classroom. That concept really makes sense but I guess it’s a thought that never crosses people’s minds. With that being said: Idle minds, especially in growing children, should be a big NO during the summer.
Below is the video, please watch it and then continue on to read suggestions on steps to take to help solve this problem:
How did watching this video make you feel? (Comment below if you like)
If there is a known problem, you would think people would try to come up with ways to solve it. Especially when it comes to the youth, and to think it could all be so simple *Lauryn Hill’s voice* to solve the issue!!
Below is a list I think can implement ACTIVE minds for the child/children in your life this summer (Keep in mind some activities are based on age):
SAY YES TO ACTIVE MINDS:
- READ to or with your child.
- Have daily or weekly learning activities. (Mimic school activities: colors, shapes, numbers, spelling, etc.)
- Visit knowledgable places in your community. (museums, art galleries, etc. You know your city so find local places to explore)
- Less tv, more outdoor activities.
- Try to get your child into a Summer Camp.
- Art and Crafts Activities (Ideas can be found online)
- Search the web for fun activities to do with your child!
- Teach your child a second language. Spanish is the easiest! (For older children) Just include the basics: numbers, colors, greetings.
Even though I believe parents play a huge role in the growth and development of their children, the blame cannot be placed solely on the parents. Yes learning starts at home but I feel everyone around the child plays a role in the growth and development as well. With that being said, I have a challenge for my readers! This summer, I challenge you to help a child stay active this summer! Active minds during the summer can possibly increase grades through the following school year, lead to the child becoming more involved in the classroom, and even be the start to positive and beneficial behaviors needed to succeed in the classroom!
If you do not have children, then reach out to your godchild, niece, nephew, cousin, or any child that you know! It’s up to us to help a child spring FORWARD this summer!
I hope this helps!!! If you have any ideas to add to the list, comment below!
Thanks for reading!!!!!!
