Do YOU know?

Hey guys! It’s been a while since my last post. (I’ve been busy so in my spare time I like to sleep lol) My goal is to post something once a week so let’s see how that goes!! This is going to be another SHORT read…

Today’s post is going to be about a GREAT day that is not highly celebrated but is one that we all should be aware of: it’s called Juneteenth.

Do you know about Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is mainly celebrated in southern states like Texas and Louisiana but it’s a day that signifies a powerful change in Black history.

I really didn’t know much about this day. Since I’ve moved to Texas, I’ve been hearing all this talk about Juneteenth. I knew it had something to do with black people and I knew it had history behind it but I never took the time out to look into the true meaning of it. I knew for sure, however, that I was not the only person who did not know much about it either. I figured ok I’m going to find out exactly what this day is about and thought why not learn and gain knowledge about this important day TOGETHER with my readers….

HISTORY! HISTORY! (So what exactly is Juneteenth?)

Have you ever heard the saying “If you don’t know your past, you won’t know your future.”   (Ok I may not be saying it correctly but you know what I mean.)

Does that saying mean anything to you? We should value history. Value the people who have come before us. Value all of their strength, pain, and accomplishments. Value their legacy. Value FREEDOM.

Click the link at the bottom for the exact historical meaning of Juneteenth. But in a nutshell: Juneteenth is a celebration that occurs on June 19th and it’s to remember the day that the last African-American slaves were freed.

Could you imagine being a slave and finally hearing the words “you are now free, you can go”?

June 19th falls so close to July 4th that all the excitement from that holiday makes people lose focus on such a great day for African-American people. We celebrate July 4th in remembrance of our country gaining it’s freedom so it’s only fair to continue to celebrate June 19th in remembrance of African-Americans gaining their freedom.

So how can you celebrate this day?

There are soooo many ways we can celebrate. It doesn’t have to be a big block party or anything like that. Just simply acknowledging the day is celebrating it! Reading and posting facts about June 19th is celebrating it. Spreading the word is celebrating it! Do a flipagram and hashtag some stuff! lol

If you live in Texas or Louisiana, maybe Mississippi too, there may be some local activities in your community going on. Research your area to see if you can find events.

I have included a link that will give you an in-depth view of why and how Juneteenth came into existence.
